Balancing Eternity

What is a decade or two in contrast to eternity?

June 5, 2019

American Methodism a couple of centuries, what is that in contrast to eternity?

Our passion inflates to a conflagration, what is that in contrast to Jesus?

We are posed, headed to annual conference in our democratic organization of the United Methodist church. We are headlong into blowing it all apart, what is that in contrast to eternity?

The people picking up the pieces of this schism will be too young to appreciate the great Candadian comedy duos like Doug and Bob McKenzie or the farm film report who would have loved how we ‘blew it up real good.”

Blew it up real good

A decade or two from this time it will be a head shaker. Why this? Why no compromise over compassion and reality? We are head long into blowing it up real good. The future generations will ask our ghosts, why didn’t we shout and shake to save God’s precious creation. Why weren’t we saving our planet? Why weren’t we creating an oasis to give respite to the thirsting and hurting souls? It is obvious so many human souls are carrying such deep wounds and fears. Why aren’t we all about oasis? Why are we about division and rigid belief in our rectitude?

We need to be carrying water from our oasis to those dying of thirst chasing mirages in the sand. Yet, we want to pass rules of behavior based on our own mirages. We want to put us first and our belief. Maybe as a man who has been fortunate, a man who has had failure, a man who has been forgiven and loved; I cannot insist on my way. Even when I have done nothing wrong, sometimes, I have created fear and unease. People’s perceptions are never our own inner view.

We need to open the ears of our souls, we will hear the cries, the fear, the hurt, and the rejection. Did you listen to #metoo – so many injured women? Can you not hear #Blacklives? I carry a privilege my fellow Americans do not. Our children, God’s children on the border and in refugee camps are they not innocent? Finally, the greatest of all, our home here on Earth. Was God not proud of the creation and are we not the ones destroying it? We come now to fight about human sexuality. Our church’s future will ask why so much passion over the insignificant? Why did we not heed the voices dying in the desert? Why did we not fight passionately for that which matters?
